Clinical Illustration
What we do
Clinical Illustration is the recording of clinical conditions for use in your patient record and can include photography, video or audio recordings. They are used by Health Care Professionals to help monitor clinical conditions and are often used in the treatment planning process along with other tests such as X-rays, scans and blood tests. Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is a teaching Trust and with your permission, clinical photographs can also be used for teaching doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. A Clinical Photographer will take your photograph. Clinical Photographers are specially trained to work with patients and clinicians to record images of conditions that may help your treatment. They are all registered Health Care Professionals with the Academy for Health Care Scientists (AHCS) and are governed by the code of professional conduct of their professional body – the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI).
Where we are based
We are based in Clinical Photography, on Route 109. That’s on the 1st floor above the Outpatient Department at The Manor Hospital.
How to access the service
You have been asked to come and have clinical photographs taken of you. They will form part of your medical records and help your doctor or nurse monitor your condition and help with planning your treatment. You can bring a friend or relative into the studio with you.
When photographing areas of a sensitive nature, we will try to provide you with a choice of male or female photographer to take your photographs. However sometimes this may not be possible and if this is the case a chaperone will be present. A chaperone will be another member of staff of the same sex as you and they will be there to reassure you and assist the photographer. Alternatively, if your condition is not likely to change and you would rather wait to be photographed by a photographer of the same sex, you may book another appointment.
Consent
Your Doctor or Nurse will have explained to you the reason for needing your photographs. The Photographer will check that you understand the level of consent that has been requested and ask you to sign confirming the level of consent you are happy with.
There are 3 levels of consent:
Type A: Publication – For images that will be published in a medical journal or website that may be seen by members of the public as well as medical professionals.
Type B: Restricted Educational Use – For images to be used for medical teaching and research.
Type C: Patient Record – For images to form part of your medical records.
