Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

What We Do

The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) service at Walsall Manor Hospital provides specialist care, support, and education for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COPD. Our dedicated Respiratory Nurse Team works both within the hospital and in the community to help patients manage their condition effectively.

Our service aims to improve your quality of life, increase your independence, and reduce the need for hospital admissions. We do this by offering:

  • Inpatient Service: For patients admitted to the hospital, our team provides education on disease management, correct inhaler technique, and assessments for oxygen and nebuliser use. Our goal is to support an early and safe discharge with a plan for continued care at home.
  • Disease Management & Education: We empower you with the knowledge and skills to manage your COPD, including understanding your medication, recognising the symptoms of an exacerbation (flare-up), and knowing when to seek help.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: We supervise and educate patients on the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme, a tailored exercise and education programme that helps reduce breathlessness, improve strength, and boost your overall well-being.
  • Oxygen Therapy Assessment: We assess patients who may require oxygen at home and provide educational visits to ensure safe and correct usage.

Where We Are Based

Our services are delivered across Walsall Manor Hospital and within the community.

Hospital Address: Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust Moat Road Walsall West Midlands WS2 9PS

How to Access the Service

Access to the COPD service is primarily through a referral from a healthcare professional, such as your GP or a hospital clinician.

  • Referral: If you have a confirmed diagnosis of COPD, your GP can refer you to our service.
  • Self-Referral: If you are already known to our service, you may be able to self-refer during an exacerbation for support and advice, helping you to manage your condition at home and potentially avoid a hospital stay.
