Clinical Intervention Team

What We Do

The Clinical Intervention Team provides specialist care for patients in the community, helping you to receive hospital-level treatment in the comfort of your own home or local clinic. Our service is designed to support early hospital discharge and prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.

Our key services include:

  • Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT): This service allows you to receive intravenous (IV) antibiotics in the community. IV antibiotics are powerful medications used to treat serious infections like cellulitis, chest infections, and osteomyelitis (bone infections). The OPAT team will teach you or a family member how to safely administer these antibiotics, or you may attend a community clinic for your treatment. This means you can continue to recover from your infection without needing to stay in the hospital.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Service: Our team assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients with suspected or confirmed Deep Vein Thrombosis in the community. A DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. Our service allows for a swift diagnosis and the initiation of treatment, reducing the risk of complications and the need for a hospital visit.

By providing these services in the community, we help you maintain your independence and continue your recovery in a familiar environment.

Where We Are Based

The Clinical Intervention Team is a community-based service. This means our healthcare professionals will either visit you in your home or arrange for you to attend a local clinic. We do not have a dedicated ward or department within Walsall Manor Hospital.

How to Access the Service

The Clinical Intervention Team accepts referrals from healthcare professionals only. You cannot refer yourself directly.

If you are a GP, hospital clinician, or another healthcare professional, you can make a referral through our single point of access. We accept referrals for patients who require:

  • Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT): For infections that require IV antibiotics but do not need inpatient hospital care.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Assessment: For patients with suspected DVT in the community.
