Paediatric Assessment Unit

Our Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) provides assessment and short-stay inpatient care to children and young people aged up to 16. The unit is made up of 12 beds, four of which are bay beds, and eight cubicles. There is also a waiting area.

The Paediatric team is made up of Clinical Support Workers, Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Resident Doctors, senior Doctors, and Consultants. Our team looks after children and young people with a range of medical and surgical conditions.

Following assessment on PAU, children and young people will either be admitted to Ward 21 or discharged home.

PAU is within the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre building at Walsall Manor Hospital. On arrival, you will be directed into the Paediatric area where you should report to reception.

PAU is a service that provides care to children and young people following a referral by medical professionals such as the GP, Community Midwife, Health Visitor and Paediatric Emergency Department clinicians. Once accepted, parents/carers should bring their child to PAU for further assessment from the Paediatric team.

PAU provides a 24-hour service to children and young people.
