Our Paediatric Day Case Unit is an eight-bedded unit caring for children and young people aged 0-16 attending for elective day case procedures such as surgery and sedated scans.

We care for children and young people before and after they go for their surgery or other elective procedures. We will care for the child or young person until they are ready for discharge. This will be on the same day. If for any reason they need to stay overnight they will be transferred to Ward 21 which is next door.

Where we are based

The Paediatric Day Case Unit is on the second floor of the hospital on Route 223. To protect our patients, all patients and staff need to buzz in and out of the unit using the intercom.

How to access the service

All admissions to the Paediatric Day Case Unit are booked by the hospital. You will receive a letter informing you of the admission.

The unit is open Monday to Friday, (excluding bank holidays), 8am-8pm.

In some circumstances, elective surgery may be provided at the weekend.

Useful resources

The Little Journey App provides engaging, interactive, and age-appropriate content to help calm any nervousness children may have about coming into hospital, and to help them and their parents and carers better understand what will happen during their elective stay. The app is free to download from Google or Apple stores and contains lots of useful information.
