Bariatrics and Specialist Weight Management

At Walsall Manor Hospital, we understand that morbid obesity is a complex health issue. Our Bariatric and Specialist Weight Management Service offers a highly specialised and comprehensive approach to treating patients for whom other weight reduction efforts have not been successful. We are an NHS designated centre for weight loss surgery, committed to providing safe and effective care to help you achieve long-term health improvements.

What We Do

We provide a specialist, multi-disciplinary service for patients with morbid obesity. Our team includes experienced bariatric surgeons, nurses, dietitians, and other specialists who work together to support you on every step of your journey. Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix; it is a life-changing intervention that requires dedication and commitment from the patient.

Our service includes:

  • Laparoscopic (keyhole) bariatric procedures: We are a leading hospital in the West Midlands for performing these advanced surgical techniques, which can lead to reduced inpatient stays, faster recovery, and earlier mobilisation.
  • Comprehensive Assessment: Before surgery, our multi-disciplinary team will conduct a thorough assessment, including medical, nutritional, and psychological evaluations. This is to ensure you are motivated, well-counselled, and adequately prepared for the significant lifestyle changes required for success.
  • Post-Surgical Support: We provide ongoing care and support after your surgery to help you with dietary compliance and long-term weight management.

Bariatric surgery is considered for patients who have tried and failed to achieve significant weight loss through other methods, such as pharmacological treatments, lifestyle changes, and community weight management services. All patients must meet strict criteria set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and our Trust’s commissioning guidelines.

Where We Are Based

The Bariatric and Specialist Weight Management Service is based at Walsall Manor Hospital.

How to Access the Service

Access to our service is by referral only. We accept referrals from GPs for patients who meet the eligibility criteria set by NICE and our Trust’s agreed commissioning funding.

NICE guidelines for bariatric surgery typically include:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 kg/m² or more, or a BMI of 35 kg/m² to 39.9 kg/m² with a significant health condition (such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure) that could be improved by weight loss.
  • A commitment to long-term follow-up and compliance with the post-surgical care plan.

Patients must have already tried other intensive weight reduction methods without success. Your GP will discuss your medical history and BMI to determine if you are eligible for a referral to our service.
