Community Children’s Nursing

What We Do

The Community Children’s Nursing Service at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides compassionate, holistic care for sick children and young people within the comfort of their own community. Our team of specialist nurses delivers care in your home, at school, or in other community settings.

Our main goal is to empower and support children, young people, and their families to confidently manage their health conditions. By doing this, we aim to reduce the need for hospital admissions and enable children to return home from the hospital sooner.

We provide a wide range of services, including:

  • Holistic Nursing Care: We care for children and young people from birth up to 18 years old (or up to 19 if they attend a special school in Walsall).
  • Complex Health Needs: Our nurses are highly skilled in caring for children with complex disabilities, long-term conditions (such as asthma, eczema, and allergies), and those who are dependent on technology.
  • Early Discharge Support: We provide short-term nursing care to help sick children get home from the hospital as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Palliative and End-of-Life Care: We offer sensitive and supportive care for children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, as well as support for their families during end-of-life care and bereavement.
  • Family Education and Support: We provide essential advice, guidance, and training to families and carers, helping you feel confident and competent in managing your child’s condition. This includes teaching you about their medication, treatments, and how to spot changes in their health.
