The way we use patient data is changing: We aim to provide the highest quality care. To do this, we routinely collect information about you and the care you receive from us. Like other hospitals across England, we are changing how we share and use this data… Find out more
The Critical Care facilities at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust are dedicated to providing high-quality care for the most seriously ill patients. Our services are split into two key areas: the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Critical Care Outreach Team.
The ICU is an 18-bed facility staffed by a large multidisciplinary team. Our focus is on providing effective nursing care, stringent infection control, and evidence-based treatment in a safe and clean environment. Many of our staff have undertaken post-graduate training in critical care, and we have a Practice Development Nurse who ensures all team members are trained to the highest standards.
The Critical Care Outreach Team provides a Trust-wide service to all adult wards. The team offers prompt and skilled support to staff caring for patients who are acutely ill, critically unwell, or at risk of becoming so. They also play a vital role in a patient’s recovery by following up with them after they have been discharged from the ICU or High Dependency Unit (HDU).
The Intensive Care Unit and the Critical Care Outreach Team are both based within Walsall Manor Hospital.
Patients cannot be directly referred to the Critical Care service. Access is determined by a patient’s clinical need, with referrals being made by medical and nursing staff within the hospital. The Critical Care Outreach Team is alerted to patients on other wards who require closer monitoring and support.
