Stroke Rehabilitation Unit

What We Do

The Stroke Rehabilitation Unit (SRU) at Walsall Manor Hospital provides inpatient care and rehabilitation for stroke patients from the Walsall borough. While all new acute stroke cases are now treated at New Cross Hospital, we accept patients who are medically stable and need dedicated, inpatient rehabilitation before they can return home.

Our goal is to help you regain your independence and meet your personal recovery goals. Our multidisciplinary team includes:

  • Nurses and doctors
  • Physiotherapists and occupational therapists
  • Speech therapists and dieticians
  • Psychologists

You’ll also have the chance to meet our ‘stroke buddies’, who are volunteers who have either had a stroke or cared for someone who has. They are great listeners and offer a unique kind of support. We’ll work with you and your family to set realistic goals and there’s no set time limit for your stay—you can remain on the unit for as long as you have ongoing rehabilitation needs that we can help with.

When you’re ready to leave, we’ll help arrange a safe discharge home, with or without care support. Your care will then be transferred to Stroke Community Services, who will follow up with you by phone at two weeks and with a visit at six weeks.
